West End Boston Real Estate

The West End is an active and diverse neighborhood found to the north of Beacon Hill and to the west of the North End. A mixture of residential and commercial property, it is the site of many new developments and is considered to be an area of increasing value in the coming years. Located near the hub of downtown Boston, living in the West End means having a short commute to some of the most popular cultural attractions and educational institutions in the city.

West End apartments and homes

The property value in the West End is considerably lower than other neighborhoods that surround the downtown area, although this is expected to change very shortly. After years of declining revenue and high-crime, the West End is finally being rejuvenated and made safe again for family life. Sadly, this slump in West End's history was due to urban renewal projects in the 1950's and 1960's, which resulted in nearly half of the neighborhood being bulldozed and replaced with roads, railroad tracks and high-rise apartment buildings.

Unfortunately, the West End doesn't have nearly as much Colonial architecture as the rest of the city, due to the aforementioned urban renewal projects. Much of the area's residential homes were destroyed at that time. However, new housing developments have been steadily multiplying in the area, making way for new generations of families to enjoy the neighborhood once again. Middle class and upper-middle class families are gravitating back to the West End, after leaving over 50 years ago.

In addition to housing improvements being made, the West End is finding that local businesses are improving in revenue. While most business in the West End revolves around Massachusetts General Hospital, local pubs, restaurants and shops are also attracting more customers in recent years. People have often cut through the West End on the way to other neighborhoods and, now that the crime rate has dropped, this occurs even more than before.

An increasingly active and socioeconomically diverse neighborhood, the West End is projected to become one of the most popular Boston communities to live in coming years. Although one of the smaller neighborhoods in the city, its history has been significant, particularly since it began to make such a large comeback. What was once a sad example of misguided, urban "progress" is now a blossoming community. Real estate in the area is highly sought and is, for a short while, affordable for many. Investing in the West End will surely return great profits to both homeowners and backers.
