West Roxbury has existed since the 17th century, boasting a long and fascinating history. Originally part of a town named Roxbury, West Roxbury was once a series of farms. After being annexed by Boston in 1874, the neighborhood began to be established more as a suburb. One of the more colorful aspects of West Roxbury's history was Brook Farm, an experimental Utopian community that lasted from 1841 to 1847. It was founded by a minister named George Ripley and his wife, Sophia. This Utopian farm community practiced the theories of Fourierism, based on the works of famed socialist Charles Fourier. On Brook Farm, people lived off the land, shared with one another and conducted their lives in a completely communal fashion. Noted participants in Brook Farm included writers Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau and Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Although the days of socialist farm communities are a thing of the past, West Roxbury still showcases many trees and open parks. In fact, one of the area's main attractions is Millennium Park, which is over 100 acres of rolling fields where residents play baseball, go bike riding and have picnics. Large, established trees adorn the residential areas, which contributes to the local property value. Many Boston neighborhoods have been urbanized to the point where trees are only found in the designated park systems, making West Roxbury a unique attraction.

Much of West Roxbury is comprised of residential homes, but attractions such as Theodore Parker Church and Saint Teresa of Avila Catholic Church offer large examples of Gothic architecture. West Roxbury's main business district is on Centre Street, where restaurants, shops, banks and other offices can be found. The neighborhood maintains more of a small-town feel than an urban community, which is exemplified by the area's devotion to youth programs and charitable activities.

Available real estate in West Roxbury is, for the most part, single-family homes built in the 19th and 20th century. Examples of Colonial architecture can be found here, as in most area of Boston. This is a community of families, professionals and students who are attending nearby colleges. Although many of the citizens in West Roxbury are middle to upper-middle class, there is a diverse mix of ethic and socioeconomic backgrounds. The property value in West Roxbury is considered reasonable but is steadily rising, making real estate investments very desirable in the neighborhood. Potential residents should note that the area is very low in crime and maintains a friendly atmosphere, one in which raising a family would be very fitting.
